One Rainy Afternoon   (Matinee Scandal)

One Rainy Afternoon is a 1936 romantic comedy film directed by Rowland V. Lee, starring Francis Lederer and Ida Lupino and featuring Hugh Herbert, Roland Young and Erik Rhodes. It was written by Stephen Morehouse Avery, with additional dialogue by Maurice Hanline, from the screenplay for the 1935 French film Monsieur Sans-Gêne by Emeric Pressburger and René Pujol, which was based on the story "The Satyr" by Pressburger.[1][2] The film was reissued in 1948 under the title Matinee Scandal.

Plot
On a rainy afternoon in Paris, debonair actor Phillipe Martin (Francis Lederer) goes to a darkened movie theatre for a romantic assignation with his married mistress, Yvonne (Liev De Maigret), but sits in the wrong sit and kisses instead lovely Monique Pelerin (Ida Lupino), the daughter of a powerful publisher (Joseph Cawthorn). Monique, who is engaged to powerful Count Alfredo Donstelli (Erik Rhodes), makes a public accusation against Phillip, and the priggish head of the Purity League (Eily Malyon) exploits the incident until it becomes a national scandal, with Phillipe dubbed "The Kissing Monster." When Phillipe is tried, his defense is that he was overcome by Monique's beauty, and that it is a Frenchman's nature to be romantic, even to perfect strangers. His punishment is to spend just three days in jail, but when he is released, he discovers that Monique has paid his fine, supposedly to avoid more publicity, but actually because she is secretly attracted to him. In the meantime, the tabloids have made Phillipe into a national hero, and instead of his producer, Maillot (Roland Young), firing the actor, he gets a raise. His new show will have him re-enact the kissing incident, but on the day of the opening Monique's father has him arrested, only be released when Yvonne, who turns out to be the wife of the Minister of Justice, convinces him to allow Phillipe to do his performance. At the show, Phillipes finds that Monique has taken the place of the actress he was to re-enact the kiss with.[3][4][5]

The film began production in early January 1936.[7] It was released on 13 May of that year, and re-released in January 1948.[8]. The film was made for an estimated $511,383, and grossed $603,903 worldwide.[9]

RIVETING ACTION-PACKED DOCUMENTARY

Part VII of the "Why We Fight" series of wartime documentaries.

In the year 2000, the United States Library of Congress mandated that this film (and the other six documentaries in the Why We Fight series)were "culturally significant" and selected them for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Film Goofs: Revealing mistakes: Twice there appears an animated clip showing about a dozen fully-equipped US troops in gray silhouette marching briskly left to right over a background graphic; however, a close look shows the "soldiers" actually wearing narrow-brimmed office-worker-style civilian hats rather than army helmets.

REVIEWS From Archive.org

Reviewer: Visual16 - - February 20, 2005
Subject: No reason NOT to watch this!
Serves as an important document as an ephemeral American film, a study of world history, a study of wartime propaganda, and a true masterclass for young filmakers to
observe the genius pacing and direction of Frank Capra.
Raises your blood pressure. I think the war on terrorism and 9-11 pales in comparison to what our parents and grandparents had to deal with.
An English critic on the IMDb page said it best-
"If I was American and went to see this movie (when it was new), I would leave feeling ten feet tall and ready to kick Hitler's ass!"

Q PLANES  1939  BW   82-MINUTES

WW-II WAR BRITISH SPY AVIATION ADVENTURE

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_Planes

TAG:  Q Planes is a 1939 spy film directed by Tim Whelan, starring Ralph Richardson, Laurence Olivier and Valerie Hobson. It was produced by Irving Asher with Alexander Korda as executive producer.

Plot

British planes carrying experimental and highly secret equipment being developed under government contract are regularly vanishing with their crews on their test flights. No-one can fathom out the problem, not even Major Hammond of Military Intelligence (Ralph Richardson) or his sister Kay (Valerie Hobson), a newspaper reporter who is working undercover in the works canteen used by the crews.

At first Hammond is seen as an outsider at the factory, even by the owner, but he soon finds a friend in a star pilot Tony McVane (Laurence Olivier) who helps him try to unravel the case. Hammond becomes convinced that the company secretary at the factory, Jenkins (George Curzon) is a foreign agent and 'mole', but Jenkins is killed by unseen gunmen before he can give up the names of his contacts.

The mystery remains unsolved when Tony returns to the aircraft factory, determined to make the next test flight. His plane, like the others, is brought down by a powerful ray beamed from a mysterious salvage ship manned by a foreign crew (unspecified, but presumed to be Germans). Tony is taken hostage on the ship, where he discovers many other missing pilots have suffered the same fate. He leads the others in an attempt to take control of the ship. Hammond learns the truth and directs a Royal Navy ship (HMS Echo) to come to their rescue.

In a short coda, Kay and McVane get together and Hammond learns, to his chagrin, that his longtime ladyfriend has been married.
