Some of your nation’s lawmakers want to silence the right of free speech for Christians and conservatives like you! It’s my firm belief that reinstitution of the “Fairness” Doctrine represents one of the greatest threats to free speech since the founding of the USA. This policy requires broadcasters to “balance” the opinions expressed on the air. A conservative view must be “balanced” by a liberal one. A Christian view on abortion, for example, must be “balanced” by a pro-abortion message. Broadcasters who refuse to do this could be fined or jailed, and certainly thrown off the air. Many stations could just cancel conservative radio programs to avoid the problem of having to air opposing views. Don’t let this happen. In lieu of getting the Fairness Doctrine through Congress, bureaucrats in Washington are now considering several other means to force conservative radio off the air, such as reconfiguring broadcast licenses — making renewal too expensive for most Christian broadcasters. Other tactics include “local diversity” boards that would pass judgment on programming, and content requirements that would force broadcasters to cover community issues at their own expense.
